Help that makes a difference – and lasts
Last month, PD Dr. Daniel Lonic returned to Hanoi for what has become a regular event in recent years. From March 23 to 28, 2025, he joined forces with Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe e. V. and the Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation from Taiwan to perform surgery on children with cleft lips and palates. This year’s mission took place at Hong Ngoc Hospital, one of Vietnam’s most renowned hospitals.
A total of 26 children underwent surgery. Many suffered complications following procedures performed by other international teams whose skills were insufficient to provide adequate care for the young patients. It is precisely in these complex cases that the experience of Dr. Lonic and Prof. Lo is so valuable. Every year, they travel to Vietnam to support the local surgical team and work closely with them, particularly on corrective surgery. All patients have recovered well from their operations and have already returned home to their families.
A total of over 60 patients were examined during the mission. Local doctors will take care of those who could not be operated on site.
“It is a great honor for me to use my skills pro bono and help give children a better future,” says Dr. Lonic. ”This project has been close to my heart for years, and I am proud to be part of this wonderful mission.”
The project has been up and running since 2017 and takes a sustainable approach: the focus isn’t just on providing direct care for the kids, but mainly on steadily building up local medical structures. The exceptionally well-trained Vietnamese teams now treat around 350–400 new cases every year—a huge success for this long-term joint effort.
A big shout-out is due to Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe e. V., which supports the project with an annual budget for around 200 surgeries. Just $280 can fund one surgery—a small amount with a huge impact.
Particularly welcome news: another mission is already planned for 2026.
Since 2002, the Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe e. V. (German Cleft Children’s Aid Association) has been working to ensure that children with cleft lip and palate have access to safe, qualified, and comprehensive treatment. Your donation gives children with cleft palate the chance to live a healthy and dignified life.

We warmly congratulate Dr. Rosanna Bodmaier on obtaining her additional qualification in hand surgery! After three years of intensive additional training, she is expanding her area of expertise to include surgical and conservative treatments of the hand – from emergencies to reconstructive procedures.
As of February 8, 2025, PD Dr. Elias Volkmer has been granted full authorization (24 months of training time) to provide specialized training in hand surgery.
